  2. When I was cleaning up my hard drive I was going through all my archives using
  3. MegaVert to get optimum performance, and when I hit my X-Wing files, and the
  4. directory listing popped up, I hyperventilated to say the least.  A 100%
  5. compression ratio (probably more like 99.7%) on the main set of files.
  6. Remember, this is LOSSLESS compression.  Each file is completely intact and
  7. identical to the original when extracted.  You'll probably have to test it for
  8. yourself to belive it, so look on your local BBS's for IOFIX, probably in the
  9. Games/Software Patch/Upgrade areas.  I had given thought to including the
  10. archive in this file, and 16k would'nt have made that much of a difference, but
  11. decided against it as: A) You might not have been able to extract it, B) The
  12. Self-Extractor was 23k, C) If left normal, a BBS file processor might convert
  13. it to a ZIP and not care about the 100k increase in file size, and D) I don't
  14. have any permission to distribute it with my own program.  So, here are the
  15. file sizes after a run of MegaVert:

  25. It blew my mind away when I saw it!  But really, this is an isolated incident,
  26. and in fact, it won't even work unless you specify that you want RAR to make a
  27. SOLID type archive.  UC2 and apparently AIN also use SOLID archives, but for
  28. the price and sheer useability of RAR compared with others, it can't be beat!!

  33. Well, it's pretty much time that ZIP and ARJ got some new versions out.  They
  34. didn't really do badly in my tests, sometimes they were ALMOST as good as the
  35. others, sometimes the others didn't do well at all.  But I can say this, the
  36. only ZIP's and ARJ's on my hard drive now are from downloading!!  Well, okay...
  37. There's ONE ARJ I have, it's over a Meg of pure text, and simply amazed me how
  38. close it came to losing.  Oh, and yes I AM planning to register the archivers
  39. that I use.  Guess which one will be first! :-)
